Implants
People might lose their teeth for several reasons, e.g. decay,
gum disease or old age. A lost tooth have to be replaced, both for
functional and aesthetic reasons. Dental implants are now
becoming a more and more popular treatment to replace missing teeth, as
they
provide a longer-term solution compared to dentures and bridges. They
help in slowing down bone loss and leave the nearby, healthy teeth
intact. |

How
does a dental implant work?
It actually replaces the root of a tooth, a socket is drilled into the
jaw-bone where the implant is placed. An implant can support a single
crown, a bridge or even a denture. The material of implants is titanium
which is highly tolerated by natural tissues and actually integrates
(fuses) with the bone, making it a very stable solution. |

What
is the implantation process like?
First your dental status is checked. If you are capable for the
treatment, the implants are placed into the jawbone. Usually this first
phase takes 1-3 days depending on the volume of the work and if a
temporary denture is needed. After the implants are planted, usually
healing screws
are placed on top of the implants, that allow your gum to heal in a way
that abutments and crowns can be finally placed. After a healing period
of 3-6 months
- which is necessary for the implants to grow together with the jawbone
- abutments are fitted into the implants, the crowns and/or bridges
are prepared by a dental technician and as a final step they are placed
on the abutments. This second phase takes longer, between 3 - 12 days
depending on the volume of the technician's work. |
 |
|
How
long is the healing process?
For the upper jawbone the healing process is usually longer, because
the bone is not that massive, it takes approximately 6 months. Implants
placed in the lower jaw heal usually within 3 months. |
 |
|
Is
everyone suitable for dental
implantation?
Unfortunately there are some factors that may hinder dental
implantation, these are certain illnesses, like marrow cancer, severe
diabetes, or blood disorder or other medical factors like eg. poor bone
quality. There are however no age limitations. |
 |
|
What
extra costs do I have to expect?
There are 3 parts of an implant, the implant itself, the abutment (or
core) and the crown or bridge that is placed on the implant. Other
costs may occur, such as X-rays, the cost of healing screws and tooth
removal, many dentists offer these smaller services for free in case of
implantation. In our clinic implantation prices include the implant
screw itself, the abutment, the healing screws and the surgery. X-rays
are free of charge. Please see our prices
page for more details. |
 |
|
Can
the implant be rejected by the body?
No. The implants are made of bio compatible titanium which is not
rejected by the body. There are other reasons however for an implant to
fail, these are eg. misplacement or diseases. |
 |
|
Are
different implant types compatible?
Usually not. If you decide to place your abutments and crowns with
another dentist (not with the one, who placed the implants), please
consult your dentist if he/she can work with the brand already placed
in your mouth. |
